I travelled to Guernsey regularly and in fact now live in Guernsey again. For the first few weeks back I continued using my contract with vodafone for lack of a better option, as well as each time I returned to visit family!

The interesting bit is that I was not once charged data usage as my data roming is turned to off and thuds my phone new better.

I guess the moral of this story is: If you want a phone that is way cool and fancy, get an iPhone. However, if you want one that does what its told, get a HTC on Android! :D

Re: Private: Vodafone iPhone goes on data roaming rampage

I've just had the same problem in Dubai. As soon as I switched on my phone, I received a Picture MMS, followed by emails. I suspect that it's a bug in iOS4 that an MMS briefly switches on the Roaming, so it can receive the picture. But this then allows all sorts of other data through. It cost me £19!

Re: Private: Vodafone iPhone goes on data roaming rampage

You're welcome, glad to help. Hopefully they will fix it one day. Although I'm not likely to be going back myself I'm sure many more will find themselves in the same situation.

Re: Private: Vodafone iPhone goes on data roaming rampage

Thanks for this post, very helpful. My mother has just come to visit me in Guernsey and brought her new iPhone with her. She started receiving SMS messages from Vodafone about her data usage and billing, which in itself is good that they are being proactive, but upon checking her settings data roaming was set to off. Your post explains this, but shows the issue hasn't been resolved yet.

Re: Private: Vodafone iPhone goes on data roaming rampage

This is indeed a shame, and such a seemingly obvious bug as well.
Still, while this is all problematic it is not particularly difficult to solve, perhaps you could try one of the following options:

1. Use one of your other phones.
2. Turn off the handset.
3. Leave it at home and only take your company mobile.
4. Nuke it from orbit (it's the only way to be sure.)

Re: Private: Vodafone iPhone goes on data roaming rampage

Firmware bug would make sense. Possibly the carrier settings are lacking too, hopefully we'll find out some day. I'm going home tomorrow and am not likely to be coming back to Guernsey in the near future, I'll always be paranoid about this when roaming in the future though.

That's a really good question (RE: the background data usage). I had been under the impression that disabling push (and fetch) email + push notifications would have caused all non-requested traffic to cease... Evidently the iPhone likes to talk! Of course my opening the Mail app to read (what I believed to be only previously downloaded) emails triggered it to contact the server.

To put this into perspective, the roaming charges are pretty good now, up to 25MB will only cost you a fixed £4.99 a day. And in any event if Vodafone had refused to reverse the charges I could have always expense'd them to my employer...

Re: Private: Vodafone iPhone goes on data roaming rampage

Nice article. Is good that you brought this people's attention. I'm sure this is f.w bug and is nice that Vodafone were reasonable. But, looks like if you hadn't kept on i on the iPhone you could have had a nasty surprise. Any idea what data it was transferring while it was roaming?
